August 4th, 2008, 4:09 p.m.
Max and Joey are in the Vigero now exiting the East Borough Bridge at Harrison St. At Joey's direction, Max turns the car left onto Tinconderoga Ave. and then right onto Morris St. and then right again onto Yorktown Ave.
"Hey! There's a bar there."
They continue down Yorktown Ave. back to Harrison St. and Max turns left onto it. Then he turns left onto Bunker Hill Ave. which bends around to the right and turns into Hancock St. Then Max turns left onto Savannah Ave. and then right onto Walton Lane.
"We're gonna hafta slow down. We're going through the park here."
They turn right onto Stillwater Ave. and then left onto Tudor St. and out of the park. They go along Tudor St. for a while and then turn right onto Saratoga Ave.
"There's a mall, and a megaplex. Cool."
They take Saratoga Ave. down to Lynch St.
"They got a car wash here, too."
They continue down Saratoga Ave. all the way to the Broker - Dukes Expressway which they turn right onto. They follow that all the way down to Hickock St. and they turn right onto it. They take a left onto Saponi Ave. and then another left onto Mohegan Ave. which bends around to the right and then around to the right again and turns into Cody St. Then they make a left onto Onondaga Ave. and then a right onto Crockett Ave.
Hey! There's the car park from earlier."
They continue along Crockett Ave. and then turn right onto Mohawk Ave. They see a bunch of fire trucks putting out a building fire and there are ambulances parked there at the corner of Bart St. along with a few cop cars. There's a cop directing traffic around the fire trucks and ambulances. Max brings the car around them and then turns left down Bart St. and then right onto Iroquois Ave. Down there are a couple more fire trucks and ambulances and cop cars with another burning building at the corner of Cisco St.
"Holy shit! Two burning buildings within a couple blocks. What the hell happened?"
Another cop directs them to go right onto Cisco St., so they do. Then they make a left back onto Mohawk Ave. From there they spend the next half-hour driving around and finding the other streets they missed. Once they're done, they end up on Dillon St. in front of the Broker Fire Department. They had stopped to talk with some of the firemen and ask them what happened with those building fires earlier. The boys were getting back into the Vigero when Max's phone starts to ring. He answers it.
"Hello?"
"Max? It's Lola."
"Oh, hey, Lola. What's up?"
"Shut up and listen, okay? I have to cash in my favor a little earlier than I expected. I need you and Joey to come over to my place and fight off these asshole enforcers who are supposed to be coming over to threaten me. Can you do that?"
"We'll try but we don't have any weapons or ammo right now."
"That's fine. There's an illegal weapons dealer who has his shop set up in a building on Dillon Street. The entrance to it is down the alley. Go there, get some weapons and come over to my place. It's on Wappinger Avenue, and it's the forth house up from the Hove Beach train station. Got all that?"
"Yeah. But where exactly on Dillon Street is this gun store?"
"The building is on the corner of Dillon and Montauk Avenue, facing Dillon street. The alley is on Dillon as well. Got it?"
"Yeah. We're on our way, now."
They hang up and Max puts his phone away, gets the car started, and heads down Dillon St. to the building with the gun store. The two of them get out of the car after Max parks it down the alley, and they enter the gun store. There are display models of various guns laying on top of crates, all unloaded. One lone man stands toward the rear of the room near an old sofa.
"Can I help you gents find a weapon or some ammo?"
"Well, we do need some ammo for the Colt nineteen-eleven pistol."
"Not too many people in this city use that gun, but, I do have a bunch of forty-five caliber ammo and some clips."
"How much?"
"How much do you need?"
"Six clips and enough ammo to fill eight."
"Okay. So, eighty rounds along with six, ten round clips? Well, that'll be eighty bucks for the ammo and another thirty for all of the clips."
"A dollar per bullet and five each for the clips?"
"You got it. So, we got a deal?"
"Sure do. There's the money."
Max hands him 110 dollars for the stuff and the dealer hands him a box with 80, .45 bullets, and 6, 10 round clips.
"There's the stuff, brother. You make sure you don't get caught with that stuff, alright?"
"We won't. Thanks."
Max and Joey leave and get in the car and Joey starts to load the ammo into the clips while Max starts the car and heads over to Lola's place. From Dillon St. they turn right onto Montauk Ave. They follow that down, around the archway, to Masterson St. which they turn right onto. They follow that over to Wappinger Ave. which they turn left onto and they follow that and turn right into an alley near Crockett Ave. Max parks the car facing the street and then helps Joey load the rest of the ammo into the clips. While they do that, they glance up every now and then to see if the enforcers are coming. While loading the ammo, they talk.
"Are we really gonna hafta shoot somebody already? It's only our first day here and we're already preparing to shoot someone."
"Maybe we can resolve this peacefully and we won't hafta fire a shot."
"Yeah. Maybe."
"Hopefully."
"Hey. Do ya think that's them?"
A black Cognoscenti has parked in the driveway in front of the garage door underneath Lola's door. Four men in black suits get out of the car. One has a pump action shotgun, two of them have MP5s, and the driver has a black 1911 Colt just like the one Max has. All four of them get their guns cocked and ready and they go up the stairs to Lola's door. The driver knocks on the door with the barrel of his Colt. Lola answers the door and the four men force their way inside.
"Shit, man. We gotta hurry. They're already inside."
Both scramble to get the last few rounds loaded into their clips. Finally, after several excruciatingly long seconds, they get all the ammo loaded into the clips. Max and Joey each load a clip into the magazine well of their pistol and cock the slide back. Then, they each put their three spare clips into various pockets in their cargo pants. They both flip the safety on their gun to "off", then they tuck the gun into their waistbands and cover them with their shirts and get out of the car. The sun is already starting to go down. They run across the street, dodging traffic, over to the staircase. They bolt up the staircase, skipping as many steps as possible, and go into cover at the door, Max on the left side, Joey on the right.
"Shit, man. What do we do?"
"I got an idea."
The door isn't closed all the way, so Max slowly opens it and then gets back into cover. He then shouts down the hallway.
"Lola, are you alright in there, babe?"
From down the hallway, Lola screams back.
"They're trying to rape me! HELP!"
By this time, the guy with the shotgun has started making his way down the hallway to the door, crouching. He creeps along slowly. Joey pokes his head around the corner to look. The guy sees him and fires his shotgun, but Joey gets back out and the buckshot hits the inside of the door. Then, as the guy cocks his shotgun to load another round, Max pops out from the other side of the door and gets a perfect headshot on him, and then returns to cover. The guy falls backwards to the ground and drops his shotgun.
Joey pops out to look and sees one of the guys with an MP5 coming from around a corner. Before the guy can shoot, Joey shoots him in the right knee. He goes down on that knee and screams in agony. He looks up and sees Joey lining up another shot. Bang! The bullet hits him in the forehead causing his head to jerk backwards and his body falls backwards to the ground as he drops the MP5. Joey goes back into cover.
"Joey, I'm goin' in. Cover me."
Joey nods, and Max crouches down and slowly makes his way inside. As soon as he gets past the doorway, Joey pops out and watches his back, pistol ready. Max creeps down the hallway, past an archway on the left that leads into the living room. He continues down the hallway until it turns to the left. He chills at the corner and looks around it and sees the other guy with an MP5. He gets away from the corner and waits.
The guy comes around the corner and as he does Max rises up, grabs the guy by the neck, and puts the barrel of his Colt to the guy's cheek and pulls the trigger. Blood and brain mater spray out the other side and splatter all over the wall. Max lets him go and his lifeless corpse drops to the floor with a loud thud as does his MP5. Max switches his pistol to safe, and tucks it into his waistband. Then he ducks down and picks up the MP5.
Max turns left down the hallway and continues to sneak along to an open door on the right side. He takes cover there, and then pokes his head around to look, and sees the last guy using Lola as a shield, with his pistol over her right shoulder. Lola's clothes are torn up and her bra is showing. Max gets his head out just in time as the guy fires a shot that goes by the edge of the doorway and into the wall in front of Max.
"Shit! Yo, Joey. Get in here, bro."
Joey makes his way in from the front door, picking up the first MP5 and tucking his pistol into his waistband along the way. He comes up to Max and crouches down next to him.
"How's it look, man?"
"He's usin' 'er as a shield."
"Fuck, I was afraid of that. So, what now?"
"We wait."
The guy holding Lola shouts from inside the bedroom.
"This whore owes a lot of money, and I'm here to collect. If you don't let me go with her, I'll kill her and both of you assholes."
Max speaks to the guy from behind the wall.
"This isn't gonna work, man. There's two of us and only one of you. You're outnumbered and outgunned. We both have pistols and we both have an MP5 from your two buddies. I hope you weren't close to any of those guys, 'cause all three of 'em are dead."
"You motherfuckers!"
At this, Lola decides to do something. She kicks back between the guy's legs and kicks him in the balls. He lets her go and she runs out into the hallway and around the corner. As she passes them, Max and Joey rush into the room. Max kicks the gun out of his hand, grabs him by the shoulder and puts his pistol to the guy's head.
"Gotcha, bitch."
"Fuck you guys. That whore is gonna get both of you killed."
"You let us worry about that. Now, who sent you?"
"Fuck you! I ain't tellin' you shit!"
Max flicks the safety on his pistol to "off".
"Ooh, you turned the safety off. You think that's gonna scare me? Fuck off."
Joey has his MP5 aimed at the guy. Max looks over his shoulder at Joey and shrugs. Joey shrugs back at Max and then Max turns back to the guy. Max cocks the hammer back on his pistol.
"Ooh, you cocked the hammer back. Not doin' it for me."
"Oh, fuck this!"
Max points his pistol at the guy's foot and shoots. The bullet goes right through his leather dress shoe, through his foot, and into the floor. The guy drops to his knee and screams in pain. Joey takes this opportunity to grab the guy's pistol that he dropped earlier. He flips the safety on and tucks it into his waistband with his pistol. Then he gets back up and points his MP5 at the guy.
"Now, one last time, who sent you?"
Lola walks in with the shotgun.
"Shit, I can tell you that."
"Who, then?"
"The Ancelotti crime family. I made a deal with them to work for one of their pimps. In return, they promised to keep the cops off me."
"Pimp? You mean, you're a hooker?"
"What? You thought I kept calling 'er a whore for no good reason?"
Max puts the barrel of his pistol in the guy's mouth.
"Shut up, asswipe."
"Yes. I am what they call a lady of the night. I fuck men, and sometimes women, for money. Is that what you wanted to hear?"
"You don't have any S-T-Ds, do you?"
"Why? Do you wanna fuck me? 'Cause it'll cost ya. And I'm not cheap, either."
"No. Just curious. I'm a little worried about my health. I don't wanna catch anything."
"Well, you got nothin' ta worry about, hun. I'm as clean as a hooker can be."
"No S-T-Ds?"
"No S-T-Ds. I'm actually pretty proud of that."
"Good."
During this time, Max had pulled his gun out of the guy's mouth and put it back to his head.
"Stop with the lovey dovey shit. I'm gettin' misty."
"Will you fuckin' kill him already?"
"You were at the part where you were tellin' us how all this shit came about."
"Right. I was workin' for their pimp but then they tried to screw me outta my fair share of the money. So, I started workin' for myself. So, they started harassing me. Threatening phone calls, chasin' me off my corner in Star Junction. Then the fuckin' cops closed down the bridge to Algonquin because of 'terrorist threats'. Buncha bullshit. I couldn't get back to my good spot and there are no good spots on this island or in Bohan that aren't already taken by other girls. And the other girls would rat me out to the Ancelottis, so I just stopped hookin'. I sold the car to you guys to try and make the money I owed them, but it wasn't enough. Now these guys came to try to take what I owed outta my body."
"Oh, for fuck sake! If you're gonna kill me, fuckin' kill me already. I'm dying of boredom here, and the hole in my foot."
"Joey, open the window."
"What?"
"Open the window."
There's a window in front of Max at the back of the bedroom. Joey goes over to it and opens it, then he goes back to where he was standing. Max lifts the guy up off his knees and walks him over to the window. He leans the guys head out the window and puts his gun to the guy's chin.
"The Ancelottis will kill you for this. Mark my words, you will..."
Max pulls the trigger and blows the guys brains out. He continues to hold the guy up.
"Joey, help me move the bodies out to their car. We gotta get rid of 'em."
"Right."
After looting the wallets of the corpses, they move the four dead bodies out to the Cognoscenti. One body went in the trunk, two in the back seat, and the last one went in the passenger seat. They also gathered up their guns. The shotgun and the two MP5s went into the trunk of the Vigero, all had their safeties turned on. The driver's pistol went with Max. All four bodies were also searched. The driver had one spare clip for the pistol, the two with the MP5s each had one spare clip, and the guy who had the shotgun had 8 spare shells. All the ammo was also put in the trunk of the Vigero. Once all of this was done, Max, Joey, and Lola had a quick conversation.
"Alright. I'm gonna drive the car with the corpses in it. We need to dump 'em in the water somewhere."
"There's a place off Mohanet avenue that should work fine."
"Sounds good. Joey, I need you to follow behind me in our car. Once we get to that spot, I'll need your help to push the car into the water."
"Right."
"Lola, I need you to stay here and collect all of the empty shell casings. There's a couple by the front door, and a few more in the house. Find all of 'em and put 'em in a trash bag or somethin'. After that's done, I know you're gonna hate this, but could you clean up the blood?"
"Shit. Alright. You wanna blowjob when you get back, too?"
"I dunno 'bout that. But you owe us for this."
"This was your favor to me for takin' two grand off that car."
"I know. But this is a little too much trouble for our first day in town. So, I think you owe us now. So, clean up the blood, and help us make this place look like there wasn't a gunfight here when we get back, and maybe we'll call it even."
"Fuck. Fine already, just get those bodies outta here."
"We'll be back as soon as we can."
Max gets into the driver's seat of the Cognoscenti and Joey gets into the driver's seat of the Vigero. Max pulls out of the driveway and heads south on Wappinger. Joey follows behind him. They make a right turn onto Crockett Ave. and they follow it until it bends around to the right and turns into Delaware Ave. They follow that all the way past the Broker Navy Yard sign, down the hill and around to Mohanet Ave. which they follow to the second side street on the left. They turn onto it and follow it around until the street ends at the edge of a pier. Max pulls his car up to the edge and stops, then puts it in park. Joey parks the Vigero back on the street facing the other way. Then he goes over to Max who has gotten out of the Cognoscenti.
"Help me move the driver from the trunk to the driver's seat."
"What for?"
"It'll make it look like they crashed into the water after being shot by a rival family or somethin'."
"Kay."
They move the driver's corpse from the trunk to the driver's seat. Once they get him there, they close the driver's door and the trunk.
"Alright, now what?"
"We push the car over the edge, into the water."
"Won't we leave fingerprints or somethin'?
"We've already left fingerprints on the car and the bodies. But the salt water should get rid of them. One thing real quick."
Max goes back over to the Cognoscenti and opens the driver's door and rolls down the window. Then he closes the door and moves to the back of the car and starts to push. Joey goes over and helps and together they get it moving and pick up some speed and push it off the edge and into the water below. They got enough speed on it to make it look like the car was driven off the edge accidentally. They both stopped before the edge and hurried back to the Vigero and got in, Max driving. Max then gets out his phone and calls Lola. After a couple rings, she answers.
"I got the shells picked up already and I was just starting to clean up the blood. What the fuck do you need?"
"Do you know of any hardware stores nearby? We'll need some paint and plaster to cover up those bullet holes."
"There should be one on Mohawk avenue just past Brunner street."
"Thanks, babe. We'll be back soon."
Max hangs up and puts the phone away and then hauls ass over to the hardware store. They park the Vigero in an empty lot by a warehouse type building across the street, then they go across the street and enter the store. They find plaster and the right color paint to match the walls in Lola's place. Max had remembered the color and found it easily at the store. They also got all the paintbrushes and tools they would need for the job. Everything totaled was 70 dollars. They paid and left with everything and got back into the Vigero and put everything in the trunk.
Then they drove back over to Lola's as quick as possible while not attracting attention from the cops. Max parked the Vigero in Lola's driveway and then they both got out and grabbed the stuff from the trunk and went up to Lola's door and knocked. She answers and lets them in and then closes the door and locks it. Lola has already gotten all of the blood cleaned up. So then, the three of them together get the plaster mixed up and cover the bullet holes with it. Then they sand it down to be nice and smooth. And finally, they paint over them to make everything look normal. Once the job is done, they go out and sit in the living room and let the place air out through the open windows. Max and Joey sit on a couch and Lola sits in an armchair across from them.
"So, what now?"
"Any cops come, yet?"
"Not while you were gone, but I doubt they will. Nobody ever calls the cops in this neighborhood. Nobody trusts 'em."
"I'm sure they would have heard the gunshots."
"Maybe. But still, they don't care about this neighborhood. So many mafiosos and gangsters live around here, and most of the cops are on their payroll. They won't come because they don't want to get in trouble with the mob. Business can't work if both parties don't cooperate, ya know."
"Right. So, basically we're safe?"
"Right."
"Okay. So, are you gonna go change outta them torn up clothes? I know it was a good idea to leave them on for the painting so you don't mess up any good clothes, but we're done now."
"What's the matter? You uncomfortable lookin' at the hot babe in the torn up clothes? I figured you guys would love that."
"It's not that. It's just somethin' about decency. I know you're a hooker, but I can't imagine you just walkin' around half-naked around other people."
"You don't think I have any shame?"
"I don't know. You tell me."
"Years of being a prostitute have made me very comfortable in my own skin. Honestly, I could walk up and down the streets, totally nude, and not be ashamed. I would, too, if the cops wouldn't bust me for indecency. I've been gifted with a beautiful body, and I'm not ashamed to show it off."
"Well, at least you have pride. That's good."
"Anyways, can I stay with you guys tonight? I can't sleep here after what happened and we need to let the place air out overnight. So, would that be okay?"
"Sure. I can't, in all good conscience, turn ya down. I'll warn ya now, though. It ain't the greatest place."
"That's fine. Anywhere but here will be fine for the night."
"Alright, then. Let's go."
The three go out to the Vigero. Lola sits in the backseat while Max drives and Joey rides shotgun. They go back out to the East Borough Bridge and out to Bohan.
