??
Max, in his unconscious state, is having another flashback. He's standing in the office of his commanding officer from the SEALs.
"Have a seat, Captain."
Max sits down in the chair in front of the commanding officer's desk. The commanding officer sits in his chair, as well.
"You wanted to see me, Colonel?"
"Yes I did, Captain. I know you've requested to be discharged, and so has your Lieutenant. Bottom line is, we have an offer for you."
"What kind of offer?"
"Well, the bottom line, Captain, is that you and your Lieutenant are two of the best soldiers we've ever had here in the SEALs. We have a mission that needs done ASAP. We would like you and your team to do it for us. If you do, we will give you and your Lieutenant an honorable discharge immediately after you've returned, and you'll both be rewarded with an additional ten thousand dollars. So, you'll both be given twenty thousand dollars upon leaving. How's that sound?"
"Where will we be going?"
The Colonel sighs.
"Back to Iraq."
"I'm sorry, sir. I'll have to decline."
"Max, look. I understand that you're distraught about what happened on your last mission. That was our fault due to bad intelligence. It's very regrettable what happened, and we're very sorry."
"I'm sorry, but I'm still going to have to decline. On behalf of myself, and my Lieutenant, we're sorry, but you're gonna have to find someone else to do this mission."
Max gets up and leaves the office. As he closes the door, he starts to wake up.
"Hey, Lola. Max is finally waking up."
"Max, are you alright?"
Max blinks his eyes a few times. He can't keep them open for very long at first as he realizes that it's broad daylight outside and they're sitting on a rooftop somewhere. The sun is coming in from the left. Max realizes he is sitting in a chair and he's tied to it. He looks around and sees that Joey is in the same predicament a few feet away and behind him. He can't see Lola but he sees a desk in front of him and a chair behind it and behind that is a door that leads to a staircase.
"I'll live. Where are you, Lola?"
"I'm right behind you. A few feet back."
"Are you tied to a chair, too?"
"Yes."
"Alright. Don't worry. Everything's gonna be okay. Joey, are you alright, man?"
"Yeah. I'm fine, dude."
At this moment, the door opens and three men armed with MP5s walk in from the staircase. Two of them stand next to the desk, one on each side. The third walks around behind Lola. Once he reaches his position, one last man walks in. He is quite old, looking to be in his 80s. He closes the door behind him and sits down in the chair at the desk. From under the desk he produces a duffel bag. He sits it on the far left end of the desk, then he unpacks it. Once done, Max can see a few dossier folders; Joey's gun; along with his gun and personal effects that he had on him when they were kidnapped. The old man begins to speak.
"My name is Giovanni Ancelotti. I am the Godfather of the Ancelotti crime family. The gang whose men you and your friend killed the other night."
"Where are we?"
"You're on the roof of the abandoned casino at the northern tip of Alderney island."
Giovanni looks at his watch.
"It is currently ten thirty-eight a.m. on August sixth. You've only been out for a few hours."
"Great. Could you get me a glass of water or something?"
One of the guards moves towards Max and goes to hit him with the butt of his MP5.
"Henry, there's no need for that."
The guard stops and goes back to his position next to the desk.
"Now then."
"Is this the part where you want me to talk?"
"No, this is the part where I want you to shut the fuck up and listen! I could have my men pump you three full of bullets right now and no one would even know. But, I have an offer for you."
"What's the offer?"
"We want you to kill someone for us."
"I don't see anything in it for us."
"Yes, well, here's the offer. You kill this man for us, and we will reward you handsomely. We will also forget about the debt your friend Lola owes us. If you refuse, we will kill you, your friend, and your whore, right here and now. Also, if you do this for us, and if you do it well, we might have more jobs for you with greater rewards."
"That's a hell of an offer. You mind if I think about it for a minute?"
"Sure. You know, those four men you killed were some of our best soldatos. They're gonna be pretty hard to replace. Normally if this happened, we'd just kill whoever did it without question."
"Alright, we'll do it."
"Max, are you nuts?!? These are the Ancelottis. They're a crime family."
"You forget your place, Lieutenant. Who is the ranking officer of this unit?"
"You are."
"Who is the logistics officer?"
"You are."
"That's right. Now please, let me handle this."
"Anyways. So, it's a deal then?"
"Yes. Do you have any information on the target?"
"These files have all the information you'll need. I will warn you, he always has a group of armed guards with him, so a frontal assault wouldn't be a good idea."
"Right. So, are we free to go, then?"
"Oh, yes. Boys, untie them if you would."
The armed guards untie Max; Joey; and Lola and then they walk over to Giovanni and stand behind him. Max walks over to the desk and grabs the dossier folders and looks through them. He finds a photograph of a man. He holds it up and shows it to Giovanni.
"Is this the guy?"
"Yes. He is a high ranking member of one of our rival crime families. We attempted to kill him ourselves a few months ago. We failed, as you can tell. He has since gone into hiding."
"It says here, he lives at this apartment complex."
"That's right. We have reports that he goes up to the roof sometimes for fresh air."
"Nice sniping opportunity."
"Indeed. Do you have a sniper rifle?"
"No."
"We can arrange something."
"Any specific time frame?
"No. Any time is fine. Feel free to take your time planning the hit and what not. Do us a favor though, and give us a call sometime before you plan to do it. We'll need to establish our alibis. I've put my number in your phone."
"Okay, great. Say, how do we get outta here?"
"There's a ladder behind you at the edge of the roof. It leads down to ground level. Your car is waiting at the east end of the building on the street. We've had our guys at the local PD open up the bridges between the islands. You can have all of your stuff back. We haven't taken any of it. You can also have those files, just make sure you properly dispose of them once the job is done. Oh, by the way. You'll find your car now has a GPS device. Use it to find your way around town. We can't have you getting lost, now can we?"
"Right. Thanks."
Giovanni and his guards leave through the door and Max hears the lock click. He turns around to Joey and motions for him to follow. They go over to the desk and take everything. Then they go to the edge of the roof with Lola and find the ladder. Max and Joey slide down it quickly and then wait as Lola climbs down. Together they go to the east end of the building and find the Vigero. They get in and Max starts the car.
"Well, the car hasn't blown up yet. So, that's a good sign."
"No jokes, man. Let's just get the hell outta here. I feel bad enough about this."
Max starts driving.
"Whaddaya mean, Joey?"
"Have you forgotten that these are the crime lords that we wanted to get rid of?"
"No, Joey. I haven't. But remember, I told you I'm workin' logistics. I already have a plan."
"Already?!?"
"Yup."
"Well? What is it?"
Max looks at Joey and just shakes his head as if to say "not here."
"Right. Nevermind. So, where we goin'?"
"Home. You want us to take you home first, Lola?"
"Uh, yeah. I need to relax. But I'm lockin' all my doors and windows."
"You shouldn't have to. They want us to do this job. If they do anything to you, they know we won't do it."
"I'm still going to. But anyways, just take me home. Okay?"
"Alright. Joey, get this GPS thing working."
Joey nods and then starts playing with the GPS. He finally finds the thing to input a destination. The GPS asks where they want to go and Lola gives it her address on Wappinger Ave. The GPS comes on and starts instructing Max where to go. They follow the directions and head off to Lola's house.
