August 4th, 2008, 9:45 a.m.
Max and Joey are sitting in two seats on an airplane. Max has the window seat on the right side of the plane, and Joey is in the seat to Max's left. Max is wearing a plain black t-shirt and black cargo pants with black leather steel-toe boots. Joey is wearing a plain grey t-shirt and grey cargo pants with similar black leather boots. Joey is listening to a CD with headphones while Max looks out the window at the skyline of Liberty City. Max thinks to himself while he looks out the window.
"Maybe this city will be different. Maybe this city will be better."
The plane now begins its desent into the airport. An announcement comes over the speakers and says so. After this, the plane begins to land on the runway. It lands and stops and all of the passengers begin to make their way off the plane into the airport to leave. Max and Joey make their way out of the airport and they go over to a newsstand. Max begins to talk with the man running the stand.
"Hi. I need today's newspaper, and do you have any maps of the city?"
"Sure do, pal. There's the paper, and there's the map. That'll be three bucks."
Max gives him the three dollars and takes the paper and map and hands the map to Joey.
"You wanna navigate?"
"Sure."
They walk across the six lanes of traffic in front of the terminal over to the Rail LTA building and sit down on one of the benches there. Max begins to look through the newspaper.
"So, what's the plan?"
Without looking away from the paper, Max responds.
"I'm workin' on it. Gimme a minute."
"We're supposed to be starting our new lives here and you're just now figuring out the plan?!?"
"The general overview of it is already done. Right now, I'm just workin' out the small details."
"Alright. So just gimme the general overview, then."
"We get a car, we find a place to live, we stock up on supplies, then we worry about finding jobs."
"With what money?"
"We both got five grand from the Navy for compensation. That's ten grand total. So, as long as we don't get an eight grand car, we should be able to find a decent apartment and get plenty of food for the time being until at least one of us gets a job. And with our skills, we should both be able to find jobs in no time."
"Alright. So, are you lookin' for a car in the classifieds?"
"Yup. No, wait. Not anymore. I found one."
"What's it say about it?"
"Let's see. Black Vigero, great condition, blah, blah, blah. Huh, special note, needs to be sold A.S.A.P. I wonder why?"
"We'll find out when we get there. Where's it at?"
"It says here it will be parked in the car park on Crockett Avenue in Hove Beach from nine in the morning until six at night."
"Looks like we got a big window, man. Let's get over there quick and hope no one else wants it."
They both stand up and see a taxi cab coming up the road towards them. Max hails the cab down, and they get in it.
"Where to, mac?"
"The car park on Crockett Avenue in Hove Beach."
"No problem."
The cab takes off for their destination and on the way Max and Joey continue to talk.
"Does it say how much they want for it?"
"Lemme check. No, it just says they'll take the best offer."
"Does it say anything else about the car?"
"Great condition, just got washed and detailed, a hundred and ten thousand miles on it. That's a lot but for an older car like that, it's really not that bad. It is a Vigero after all."
"A nice muscle car."
"Yup. Very nice indeed. Rear-wheel drive, good for powerslides and drifting. Should have some decent horsepower. We could tune it up a little and squeeze a little more out of 'er. Should be just what we need."
The cab pulls up to the car park and stops and the cabbie turns towards them.
"Here we are, boys. You got the money, right?"
"How much is it?"
"Across the island, twenty bucks."
"There ya go, twenty bucks."
Max hands the cabbie the twenty dollars and then Max and Joey get out of the cab and go over to the car which is sitting in the middle of the car park with a "For Sale" sign in the front window with a phone number written on it.
"Look. There's a number to call."
Max looks around the car park and the surrounding area, or at least what he can see from where he's standing.
"Well, it doesn't look like there's anyone around waiting or anything. So, I guess we'll have to call the number."
"You got your phone on ya?"
"Yeah, let me call 'em."
Max pulls a cellphone out of his front, left pants pocket, turns it on, and once it's ready, he dials the number on the "For Sale" sign and waits for someone to pick up on the other line. After a couple rings, a sexy female voice answers.
"Hello?"
"Hello. My name is Max. Is this the owner of the black Vigero that's for sale in the car park in Hove Beach?"
"Yes."
"Well, I'm very interested in buying it. In fact, I'm standing next to it right now. I was wondering if you could come down and we could discuss a price. Would that be alright?"
"Sure. I'm just around the corner. I'll be right down."
"Alright. Thank you so much."
Max hangs up and puts his phone away in the same pocket.
"What did they say?"
"Dude, it was this hot sounding chick. She said she's right around the corner and she'll be right down."
"Cool. Hey, do you think that's her?"
Max turns around to look where Joey is pointing and sees a beautiful red-headed young woman with a curvy body coming towards them from around the corner towards Wappinger Avenue. She's wearing a pink belly shirt with her white bra straps showing and black booty shorts and red high heels. She pulls a red sucker out of her mouth as she walks up to Max and Joey.
"Is one of you Max?"
"Yeah, that's me. This is my friend, Joey."
"Hello there."
"Hello there, yourselves, boys."
"And who might you be, miss?"
"My name's Lola."
"Well, miss Lola, this is a fine car you have here."
"Yeah. I have tried to keep 'er in good condition. But something has come up and I need to get rid of it as soon as possible."
"Yes. I saw that in the ad. Is there a reason for that? Is it a problem with the car or something?"
"No. There's nothing wrong with the car. It handles good and gets decent mileage."
"Then why do you need to get rid of it so soon?"
"It just represents a very dark time in my life, and I need to leave it all behind me. Ya know?"
"Right, right."
"What about you two? What's your story?"
"We just got off a plane from Los Santos."
"Right. We got out of the Navy about a week ago and we decided to start a new life, here in Liberty City."
"Troubled past?"
"Something like that."
"I can't really judge. I have a troubled past, myself. I won't go into it, but the car is part of it, and I just need to leave it all behind me."
"Right, so, do you mind if I take it for a test drive?"
"Sure. Leave your friend here with me and we'll wait for you."
"Alright. Joey, do you mind?"
"No, no, no, no. I don't mind at all. I'll just wait here with miss Lola and discuss a price. You hit a few corners and tell me what you think when you're done."
"Alright. I'll be back in a few minutes."
"Oh, here's the keys."
Max takes the keys from Lola, gets in the Vigero, starts it up, and pulls it out of the car park onto Crockett heading west. Then he takes a right turn onto Wappinger. Then another right onto Hardin street. Then another right onto Oneida avenue and turns back into the car park, turns around and heads back in the opposite direction taking the same path only backwards. Once he gets back into the car park, he parks the car, turns it off, and gets out and goes over to Joey and Lola.
"Well, dude, what do ya think?"
"She handles really nice. I'm likin' it, man."
"That's great, dude. I think we got a good price, too."
"Okay, how much?"
"Six grand and she's yours."
"That actually sounds pretty good."
"I had to talk her down a little, but we worked out a deal that should be great for all of us."
"What deal?"
"We just have to do her a small favor. Otherwise it woulda been eight grand."
"What's this favor, Lola?"
"I'll call you with the details on it, later. But don't worry. From what your friend here told me, it shouldn't be anything you two can't handle. Now, do we have a deal, or not?"
Max thinks for a moment. He looks the car over again. Then he looks at Joey. Then he looks at Lola. She walks right up to him and puts her hands on his shoulders and speaks directly into his left ear.
"C'mon, sweetie. I really need this favor done for me. And in return, I'm knockin' two thousand dollars off the price tag of this car for ya. And if you do get this done for me, I just might be able to help you find some more work."
"Alright. It's a deal. I just hate to see a damsel in distress."
Lola backs up a couple steps and extends her hand to Max for a handshake. He shakes it.
"Alright. Let me go get the title and I'll sign it over to ya. It's already been notarized so you won't have to do that. But you will need new license plates, and since you boys are from out of state, you might want to get new driver's licenses for here."
"Oh, we will. Don't worry about that."
She goes away to get the title. While she's gone, Max and Joey talk.
"I hope you know what you got us into, Joey. This babe is obviously into some deep shit, and now we're gonna hafta clean it up. And I hate touching fecal matter."
"Then wear gloves. Seriously, though. Don't worry. She said we should be able to handle it."
"Shoulda, woulda, coulda. Doesn't mean shit. Did you tell her about us being ex-SEALs?"
"Yes. I wasn't going to, but then she asked about us being in the Navy. I had to tell 'er. I was trying to gain her trust so she'd be more inclined to lower the price on the car for us. We should be glad nobody else got to her first."
"Yeah. We do need the car."
"Fuckin' right we do. So how about we pay her the six grand, do this favor for her when she calls, get the new driver's licenses and plates, and then find a damn place ta live? How's that sound?"
"Sounds like a plan. Oh shit. Here she comes."
Lola comes back with the title in her hands.
"I already signed it, so you just need to put your John Hancock on it, and she's all yours."
She hands it to Max with a pen. He walks over to the hood of the car and uses it as a table to sign the title. He comes back over and gives her the six grand and shakes hands with her again.
"Pleasure doin' business with ya miss Lola."
"The pleasure's all mine, trust me. I already have your number and I'll call you when I'm ready."
"How long's that gonna be?"
"I dunno. Could be a day or two, maybe even a week or two. Just be sure to answer when I call you."
"Oh, I will. Don't worry about that."
"Good. Now you boys go find a place of your own and settle in. And don't go shootin' any innocent people."
"We won't."
Lola shakes hands with Joey and then walks away. Max and Joey get in the Vigero and talk.
"I can't believe you told her about that."
"I can't either. But she is one persuasive woman."
"Whatever. Let's just go find a place to live."
"Five steps ahead of ya, man. While you were test driving the car, and while I was talking with miss Lola, I was looking through the paper. I found us an apartment that should be just fine."
"Alright. Well, you're the navigator, so tell me where I'm drivin'."
"It's on one of the other islands called Bohan. But first, let's head to the DMV and take care of that shit. Lola already told me how to get there so let's go."
"Alright."
Max starts the car and they head off to the DMV.
